30 Nov Maycu NR

Yankuam Cabins - Dick climbing the stairs of a rather rustic cabin

Most of this day was spent along the Nuevo Paradiso Road, which runs through the Maycu Reserve (and onto Peru) and on other nearby roads.

We were relived to get views of the rare and very local Orange-throated Tanager fairly early in the day.  The species is also found in a fairly close and small area in Peru.

Orange-throated Tanager - This species is a near Peruvian endemic
with birds only found in or close to this reserve.

There were a lot of birds in this area and our sightings included  Opal-rumped Tanager, Lettered Aracari, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Swallow Tanager, Lineated Woodpecker,  Black Caracara,  Gilded Barbet,  Purplish Jacamar, White-browed Purpletuft and Spangled Cotinga.

Black Caracara - Found in all South American countries as far south as Bolivia.

Lettered Aracari  - This species is found in Ecuador, Colombia, Peru and Brazil.

Chestnut-eared Aracari - A similar range to the above species but
also extending to Bolivia and Paraguay.

Lineated Woodpecker - Found from Mexico and as far south as Paraguay.

Opal-rumped Tanager - The distribution extends across South America
as far south as Bolivia.

Crested Oropendola - A widespread species from Costa Rica to Paraguay.

Short-crested Flycatcher - A widespread species in the top two-thirds of South America.

Amethyst Woodstar - Found in the garden at Yankuam Cabins. A very widespread
Hummingbird found from Venezuela south to the very southern part of Brazil

White-browed Purpletuft - Found while birding along a remote road.
It is quite a widespread species which is found in Ecuador,
Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Bolivia and Brazil.

Gilded Barbet - A male.  Found across NW South America almost into Guyana.

Gilded Barbet - Female.  Perched close to the male.

A short video clip of a pair of Gilded Barbets

Purplish Jacamar - A scarce species with a restricted range.
The main population is in Eastern Ecuador with a smaller population in NE Peru.
There are also tiny populations just over the borders of Colombia and Brazil.

Spangled Cotinga - Found in all of the countries in the northern half of South America.

Unfortunately we could not get closer to this stunning bird.

We headed back to Yankuam Cabins after a good days birding for dinner and overnight stay.
